For the Love of Reading
Reading: It Becomes You!

By Blog No Comments

By: Debra Young Hatch

No one is born knowing how to read, much less having a passion or a love for reading.  We just don’t come that way; it is not in our DNA.  Reading is a skill taught early on and practiced daily.  And if taught well reading becomes a pleasure – an integral part of you – and serves as a springboard for imagination, creativity and a life-long passion for learning. In other words:  Reading Becomes You!

But keep in mind, learning to read is not a natural skill, or a talent.  It doesn’t just happen; it is taught with intention. So from the start be intentional in teaching your child to:

  • love books – the touch, the look and the feel of books held in their hands
  • love sitting safely in your lap and being read to each day by you
  • love the joy of learning new sounds, new letters and new words
  • love the notion and accomplishment of one day being able read on their own
  • love discovering new books everywhere — at home, at school, in the library or in a bookstore

There are so many ways – from the outset– you can teach your child the love of reading.  And you can do it in such a way that it becomes so much a part of them and who they are that they could never imagine a world without books.

The opportunities to teach a child a love of books and their extraordinary bounty are limitless and often present themselves in simple, unexpected ways.  When your child comes up to you with a book and a blanket in hand, wanting you to sit down and read to them, seize the moment at every opportunity; you will be so glad you did.  It is such a tiny slip of time, but the long-term effects are without measure.

With every book you take the time to read to your child, you expand their minds, their hearts, their world and their love for books.  You are setting them on a life-long journey of loving books and loving to read, and you are doing it intentionally.  And for that small moment in time you have the opportunity to travel on that journey with them, from time-to-time you can remind them and yourself that Reading:  It Becomes You!

There are many ways to enlarge your child’s world.
Love of books is the best of all”

Giraffes in My Closet sales add up to $2,000 gift for pediatric cardiac program

Corpus Christi – June 24, 2020 – For Kids’ Sake Publishing, Inc. – a Corpus Christi based children’s book publishing company – has made the first installment on its mission to donate book sale proceeds to benefit children struggling with long-term health issues.

“By donating $2,000 from our initial book sales from our first title – Giraffes in My Closet – to the pediatric cardiac program at Driscoll Children’s Hospital,” explains Debra Young Hatch, For Kids’ Sake publisher/author, “we have taken our first giant step toward fulfilling our mission.

“That mission,” continues Hatch, “is that each book published is dedicated to a child who is living with a long-term health struggle. What that means is part of the proceeds from the sale of each book go to a hospital or an organization that helps other children with similar ongoing health issues.  In this case, Giraffes in My Closet is dedicated to 7-year-old Heath Naumann who has had multiple heart surgeries in his young life.”

But the donation itself, according to Hatch, is not just from For Kids’ Sake, it has actually been given by a whole community of people throughout South Texas and well beyond.

“Hundreds of people have contributed to For Kids’ Sake being able to make this donation to the cardiac program at Driscoll.  Everyone who purchased a book is an integral part of this gift.  So that means they are all part of helping children who are struggling with long-term heart issues who are seeking healing at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, and we are most grateful.”

Hatch adds:  “For Kids’ Sake Publishing has been a dream that’s been a long-time coming.  The giraffes have brought that dream to life, and now through so many people’s efforts and generosity – and the sale of one-book-at-a-time – we have been able to make the first installment in turning that dream into a reality.”

In addition to publishing children’s books and donating funds, For Kids’ Sake Publishing, Inc. is dedicated to sharing children’s stories in an effort to create conversations and awareness of children’s health issues.

A portion of each book sale to benefit cardiac program at Driscoll Children’s Hospital

Corpus Christi – November 6, 2019 – For Kids’ Sake Publishing, Inc. – a new Corpus Christi children’s book publishing company – is hitting the ground running with its first release this week and a new book launch and signing on Thursday, November 7.

“We have been working on For Kids’ Sake Publishing and  Giraffes in My Closet for several years, and are so pleased we are launching our first book” — Giraffes in My Closet,” says author and owner of For Kids’ Sake Publishing, Debra Young Hatch.

“The concept of For Kids’ Sake Publishing,” explains Hatch, “is that each book published is dedicated to a child who is living with a long-term health struggle and part of the proceeds from the sale of each book sold go to a hospital or an organization that helps other children with similar ongoing heath issues.  In this case, Giraffes in May Closet is dedicated to 6-year-old Heath Naumann who has had multiple heart surgeries in his young life, has survived and is doing extremely well.”

A portion of the proceeds from Giraffes in my Closet, according to Hatch, will go to the cardiac unit at Driscoll Children’s Hospital and part to Children’s Health Hospital in Dallas where Heath had all of his surgeries.

As far as the impetus for the publishing company and the book, Hatch says:  “Coming from a journalism background, I had the opportunity to write stories about children and their families for Driscoll Children’s Hospital for 15 years, and my goal was to find a way to take that experience and those writing skills and use them to benefit kids; that was the genesis of For Kids’ Sake.”

And she adds: “For Kids’ Sake has been a dream that’s been a long-time coming and the giraffes,” smiles Hatch,”they brought that dream to life.”

The book launch and signing of Giraffes in my Closet  will be at Hanley Wood in Lamar Park Shopping Center on Thursday, November 7 from 4-6 p.m.
