Giraffes are bashful creatures, according to a new children’s book by Corpus Christi writer Debra Hatch. That’s why they like to hide in closets.

After she read the book to students at Hicks Elementary Thursday morning, a kindergartner spoke up: “The book was really amazing,” he said, but “giraffes can’t fit in any closets.”

Hatch countered that, in a way, it is possible. “You can create anything in your imagination and write it,” she said.

Author, Debra Young Hatch Reads “Giraffes in My Closet” to Kindergartners at
Gloria Hicks Elementary School

"How many of you have seen a giraffe?" queries Debra Young Hatch as she prepares to read to kids at Hicks Elementary.

"Today we're going to learn about giraffes, authors and illustrators and read a story about three giraffes, Mildred, Seth and Emily," says Hatch.

They slip inside on all fours," begins the story of "Giraffes in My Closet".

Kindergartners at Gloria Hicks mimic giraffes by trying to touch their tongues to their ears.

Kids raise their hands to share ideas about giraffes, authors and illustrators.
